What to do if your window breaks

Glass windows are built to protect. Unfortunately, when glass breaks, and it can happen, it can leave you stressed and wondering what to do next.

Fortunately, we’ve compiled a quick, simple and straightforward guide to how you can deal with a broken window. Don’t worry as help is never far away.

So, what should you do if your window breaks?

Find out with the trusted Perth windows and glass company, SV Glass.

Identify the cause of the damage

Glass products and windows can break due to an endless number of reasons. With this being the case, it’s time for you to determine what caused the breakage of yours.

It could be thanks to a soccer ball, cricket ball, basketball, golf ball, baseball – you name it!

However, if it’s due to something more worrisome like weather damage or a break-in, you should also inspect if there’s any damage to any other part of your building, too.

Restrict access to the area

For the safety of yourself and others, block off access to the site of the broken window(s). Broken glass can pose a serious danger to humans and animals, so act as soon as possible.

How?

  • Inform people to stay away from the area.
  • Create a makeshift blockade (even if it’s some tape, a barrier, or closing a door leading to the area).
  • Supervise small children or pets if they are within proximity to the damaged window(s).

Keeping everybody safe at the site, whether it’s at your home or business, and however the glass broke is absolutely paramount right away.

Contact SV Glass

Once you have done the preliminary cause investigations and cordoned off the area, make the call to your local Perth glass expert. At SV Glass, we can tend to the issue fast, and professionally advise on your next steps.

The sooner you call us, the less likely you’ll have to deal with theft potential, pest infestations and (further) weather-related issues.

Definitely call your insurance company too if it’s your residential or commercial premises which has been impacted. If you suspect it was a result of theft or vandalism, you should call the police, too.

Clean and prepare the site

Now it’s time to clean up the site. Remember to not disregard your safety during this process.

How so?

  • Wear long-pants, covered-in shoes and heavy-duty gloves.
  • Gather the necessary equipment – garbage bags, dustpan and broom, vacuum if necessary and paper towels.
  • Wrap glass shards in paper towel before disposing in disposable bin bags.
  • Sweep smaller glass shards with a dustpan and broom and then use the vacuum to clean up excess glass particles.

From here, you’ll want to apply a temporary window covering. A tarp, plastic sheeting or a good-quality, large garbage bag should do the trick while you await your Perth glass technician.

SV Glass are here for your high-quality glass requirements. We have the expert customer service, products and installation capacities to produce stunning, long-term results.
